The term "Probiotics" originated from the Greek, meaning "for live". In the past, the prerequisite for probiotics to produce health effects on the human body, must be able to colonize the gastrointestinal tract, and by regulating the balance of the normal flora, which can achieve health care effects such as inhibiting harmful bacteria, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, and improving immunity. However, the conception of probiotics is constantly evolving. Clinical and experimental studies have extensively proven that in addition to positively affecting intestinal function, probiotics can play a role at the skin level due to their unique characteristics. For example, some animal experiments have confirmed that Lactobacillus plantarum can inhibit the growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa on the skin and promote skin tissue repair.Shown in clinical trials of burn patients that probiotics can be used in wounds to reduce bacterial infections and promote wound recovery. These studies all indicate that the application of probiotics is quietly being transferred to skincare. The skin is the largest immune organ of the human body, in fact, there is an ecology of diverse bacterial on it's surface which coexists each other. These bacterial forming the first barrier of skin by producing antimicrobial peptides  enhancing the immunity of Langerhans cells and T cells. This is a complex and dynamic balanced ecosystem, and it can be disturbed easily in many situations. For example, over use irritating antibacterial detergent will reduce probioticsflora and destroy skin's natural ecosystem. It may induce many clinical symptoms of skin diseases once the first barrier is destroyed, such as skin dryness, over-sensitivity or skin damage. It have been proven to have multiple beneficial effects when  probiotics applied directly to the human skin such as strengthening immune system, reducing infections, and accelerating the wound healing process. These beneficial effects can be achieved by a variety of mechanisms, for example, the production of inhibitory substances (such as acids), the production of natural antibiotics, the blocking of pathogen adhesion, and the competition of nutrients, antioxidant activity, and the increase capabilitiesof tissue repair.

In fact, the evidence from these experiments has increased the demand for many skincare products. According to statisticsof Mintel's Global, New Products Database revealed, from 2013 to 2017, the usage of probiotics used in skincare products are increased 98% in the United States. A report by"Research and Markets" also predicts that global products including hair care, oral care, and skin cosmetics, probiotic relate products will be the most important category in the future.
In addition, it is worth noting that these products are not limited to the application of probioticsitself. It can be different used of fermentation extracts dependent on the probiotics and fermented nutrients. These fermented extracts will become smallmolecule weight amino acids, organic acids, vitamin B complexes, etc., which can achieve moisturizing, anti-aging, and increase barrier effects on the skin.

Such asStreptococcus thermophilus fermented milk, the extract contains a high amount of ceramide, which is a popular moisturizing ingredient in recent years; Bifidobacteriumfermented soy milk, the extract contains a high amount of activated estrogen whichit can increase skin hyaluronic acid. The lactic acidproduced by Lactobacillus acidophilus can accelerate the metabolism of the stratum corneum and reduce the dullness of the skin.Besides, our domestic manufacturers have obtained invention patents for probiotic fermentation extracts. The fermented extracts can (1) antibacterial; (2) increase the growth of native probiotics; (3) produce an acidic environment, etc. A number of intimate skincare products have been applied to women in all aspects of cleaning and maintenance.  These ingredients are indispensable raw materials in skincare products.
Based on these results, the choice of probiotics and its fermented nutrients will very important for probiotics apply to skin care products, and it is also a new business opportunity for probiotics.
